Upcycle My Museum!

Sustainability is one of the big issues of our time and the most important prerequisite for securing a future worth living. We at the RJM are also increasingly concerned with our own sustainability. A working group has now developed a concept on how sustainability can increasingly become part of our own everyday work. 

Thematic Series: “Rethink Fashion!”

In 2021, in cooperation with the women's rights organisation FEMNET, we launched our first thematic series in the field of sustainability: "Rethink Fashion!" At the beginning, voices from civil society, politics and business as well as activists from Myanmar had their say in an interesting discussion on the newly passed supply chain law. With actors from politics and business, with activists and textile experts, we talked about the economic and social aspects of a globalised textile economy, pointed out problems, but also alternatives. Children and young people could get creative in upcycling workshops. Poets shared their views on consumption and sustainability at the poetry slam "Reimreise". The series ended with the closing of FEMNET's campaign #eintshirtzumleben.

STAGEAWEAR

As part of the thematic series "Rethink Fashion!", the project STAGEAWEAR invites visitors to participate beyond the duration of the series. Together with students from the ecosign/Akademie für Gestaltung, we have critically revised a part of the section "The Body as Stage" in the permanent exhibition, which opened in 2010. Here it is shown that people all over the world use clothing, accessories and body adornments to provide information about what position they have or would like to have within their community. Carmen Servos, Leonie Hogefeld und Sarah Menzer expanded this presentation to include an interactive section on the self-staging of young people. In doing so, they also explored which role sustainable fashion plays for them.
