The RJM offers many different event formats: from storytelling cafés and film series to creative workshops and dance performances, from cosy conversations with curators to exciting panel discussions on current topics.

Most of the events are in German. The booking of individual tours in English is possible under service.museumsdienst@stadt-koeln.de.

HOT COALS

Hot Coals ist ein partizipatives, forschungsbasiertes Kunstprojekt, das zur kollektiven Auseinandersetzung mit der sogenannten Scold’s Bridle (Schandmaske) einlädt – einem mittelalterlichen Folterinstrument zur Disziplinierung vor allem von Frauen und anderen gesellschaftlich marginalisierten Personen. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage, wie sich in diesen Masken nicht nur die Kriminalisierung weiblicher Stimmen, sondern auch die Ausgrenzung und Dämonisierung von Tieren, Pflanzen und anderen nicht-menschlichen Wesen manifestiert. Viele historische Masken trugen tierische Züge oder pflanzliche Ornamente – symbolisch aufgeladen durch lokale Folklore. Im Workshop werden aus Ton eigene Masken im Kleinformat gestaltet, die auf historische, symbolische und spekulative Weisen das Erbe der Schandmaske hinterfragen und transformieren. Anschließend an den Workshop werden die Masken glasiert und gebrannt, um Teil eines wachsenden Forschungsarchivs zu werden – rund um die Hexenverfolgung und Stimmen des Widerstands. Die entstandenen Artefakte des Workshops werden in der Ausstellung Out of Focus ausgestellt. Nach Absprache ist es möglich die eigene Maske nach der Ausstellung zugeschickt zu bekommen.

Hot Coals is a participatory, research-based art project that invites collective engagement with the so-called Scold's Bridle – a medieval instrument of torture used primarily to discipline women and other socially marginalised individuals. The focus is on how these masks manifest not only the criminalisation of female voices, but also the exclusion and demonisation of animals, plants and other non-human beings. Many historical masks bore animal features or plant ornaments – symbolically charged by local folklore. In the workshop, participants will create their own small-format masks out of clay, which will question and transform the legacy of the mask of shame in historical, symbolic and speculative ways. Following the workshop, the masks will be glazed and fired to become part of a growing research archive on witch hunts and voices of resistance. The artefacts created in the workshop will be exhibited in the exhibition. Upon request, it is possible to have your own mask sent to you after the exhibition.
